I think some teens do it because they’re unsure about whether they want others to hear what they’re saying, possibly out of fear that the listener’s response to the statement might be negative. Mumbling, rather than yelling or talking in a normal tone, also might be a sneaky way of bothering whoever’s listening. Some might mumble because they think better when they hear their own voice.
