My guess is that they are attempting to throw it in the face of their 'detractors,' whom they see as 'all' black women (or white men - it happens to us, too) even though 90 percent of either population couldn't care less.

I participated in similar racial taunting as a teenager. I lived in a racially mixed housing project where the lines of race were fractured. If a female of one race went out with a male of another, the males of the female's particular race would write if off to 'money' (though we white guys didn't have any more money than the blacks in the projects) or the 'taboo' factor (though 'Townie White Trash' is looked upon as badly or worse than black folk among many in society.)

To combat such blatant racial stereotyping, I'd throw it in the faces of the blacks or Puerto Ricans, to show that my girlfriend was with me for me, not because of my supposed income. It was a slap to the white guys, too. It's expected among some white guys that going with a colored girl is fine, as long as it stays behind doors. It was immature, to say the least, but I've grown out of it. Racial ball-breaking is as old as the hills and won't go away soon, until interracial relationships become 'normal' by American standards.

As I've been called 'White Trash' many times in my life - by white people and other races, from foster parents, employers and prison guards - I feel I can provide some further insight on what others have said and why their prejudices stand. Plain and simple, in order to unite, a group needs someone to separate themselves from. While privately these same white people condem the actions of blacks and every other race, that is not an acceptable way of thinking in most middle-class talks. However, there is no social faux pas against condeming White Trash, usually rural but not always. They are perceived as poor because of stupidity or alcoholism rather than institutional discrimination. Their stereotypes are either silly and untrue, like incest, or nothing to be ashamed of, like living in trailers. However, the common joke of hillbillies and bumpkins in American humor is as old as the hills they are from, and can be directly traced to treatment of the rural population in Europe.

Same reason most people are afraid of things. Lack of experience around Black people or too many fearful experiences around Black people. For those who grew up in middle-class White-bred communities, their main exposure with Black people has been through the headlines on the evening news or rap music. Not the most flattering of mediums.

I don't think you could find a good-hearted Black person that would agree with those acts of violence. But Black-on-White hate crimes don't invoke the same outcry because they are relatively a recent phenomenon, when White-On-Black hate crimes have existed since slavery and before. The media is meant to sell papers or ad time. They report what people want to hear, what they agree with. Most White people want to believe the only racists are the poor Whites living in the Hills committing hate crimes. Blacks don't want anymore negative representation of themselves in the media. The media will not reach their ultimate financial goal reporting stories that inflame. Sad but true.

Sean, it sounds as though you are from my neighborhood. Or Southie, or Quincy. No matter, though. Italians are certainly not the only white ethnic group that is racist. History has shown that. However, in the last 20 or so years, there have been several high-profile racist incidents involving Italian Americans. I believe it lies more with their class than with their ethnic group in those cases. Most of those were crimes performed by blue-collar, working-class whites. Because I've spent 21 years among people like them, I know that their racism is probably the same as any other group of white people, but their roots cause them to deal with it differently. Their low monetary status means they can't discriminate in the job market, so they use violence to put blacks down and feel better about themselves. They use the excuses of keeping the neighborhood safe and clean, but it's really xenophobia and fear of change. I reiterate, I've spent 21 years in Charlestown, where until forced integration of our housing projects, a black person or any other minority would've been in danger to walk through here. And Charlestown is predominantly Irish American.

Two reasons why, as I've felt on my own and from other White guys I know. The biggest reason is the flack you get from other guys, Black and White. While this SHOULDN'T be a good reason, it's probably the most common. Black guys I've encountered while with a Black female, even one I'm not romantically envolved with, have been everything from obvious jerks with a staring problem to outright hostile a**holes. I've even had to resort to physical violence a few times. White guys, friends of mine, usually think it's cool but usually think ignorantly and tell me things like Black women are for the bedroom and not for outside. White guys seem to think Black females are 'freaks' usually with only a few experiences to back them up. The other reason I've found is I don't usually have much in common with Black females. I'm recovering from a strict Catholic background, while they were often Baptist or even Muslim. They listen to R&B/Hip Hop, while I'm rock and roll. They want to go to dance clubs and raves, I'm happy putting away a few at the pool hall or walking in the park. Many White guys, though they won't say it outright, believe Black women are 'High-maintenence' and believe in the loud and rebellious stereotype and choose not to get involved. This was never a problem for myself though, I'm Loud and boisterous myself and enjoy the challenge when faced.

That's just their way of feeling superior. It's a subtle little way that black and Spanish people practice their own racism. Same way white people might act aloof and snobby; same song, different tune ya know? You probably are the 'dumb honky' to them, but don't ever let yourself think that.

I think there are cultural differences that cause different attractions. White men have always had the petite Victorian ideal of a woman, and that's what we are told is the epitome of beauty. Just look at white inventions like corsets. Black men and African culture in general have always looked toward a larger, more 'healthy' ideal. In Africa, the larger a woman is, the more it shows her wealth, therefore being more desirable. Then there's the obvious physical predeterminations that cause white women to be smaller and more thin, while black women are more voluptuous and curvy. But I'll tell you one thing, I am one white man who digs black women, skinny or curvy. I don't know what it is, but I love the sensuality of nubian princesses.

On average, white women are slimmer, while black women are more curvy and voluptuous. I believe it's what the men of different cultural groups are used to. This can be seen for generations. In Africa, healthy women are desired; it's a sign of wealth and happiness. Don't forget, Europeans were the people who invented corsets, to keep white women skinny. I, for one, love black women how they are. Slim or curvy, something about the sisters just attracts me.

This may come off as racist, and it probably is, but when the housing project I grew up in was integrated with blacks, Jamaicans, Latinos and Asians, I too found the black people of Jamaican descent more hard-working and trustworthy, and all in all, better neighbors. American blacks have developed an us vs. them syndrome when it comes to whites that severly limits them in their rush to the mainstream. I think many of their own behaviors is what turns people, white and otherwise, off to them. However, my perception may be biased because Charlestown has been historically insular, espically towards blacks, and they may have reacted because of the history.

Most people who dislike these types of relationships are white men and black women, for obvious reasons. It is always a shot to their ego. Some may lie and say things like 'There aren't enough good men around' or something to that nature. They feel inferior to said person of the different race. Same thing for the guys. We wonder, why would a beautiful woman go after guys different from herself when there's so many like her that are just fine? I'm not proud of it, but it was enough to get couples beaten or killed in Charlestown back in the day. I think more black women and white men have to copulate to finally regulate this problem.

I've noticed females use directions from place to place much the same way you describe. Men don't want to defer from the course, and will always take the same way to a location. They are better at remembering street names and house numbers. Women use landmarks and general direction. When I worked at a gas station, women asking for directions would inevitably ask, 'What's it near?' while men always wanted directions drawn out from street to street. It's just one of those things we can all laugh about in private concerning the other sex.

They kill themselves because too often, there isn't anyone to turn to. Many kids who commit suicide are too disturbed to have friends, and the ones who do, they can't confide in them. Frankly, kids don't care. Even if they did, I don't think teenagers are wise enough and have enough life experience to tell a suicidal kid what he or she wants to hear. In lots of cases, parents are too wrapped up in their own lives to not only care, but to even notice their kids are falling apart. Psychiatrists? Please, their answers are always medication, medication, medication. Social workers? Their answers are always removal, removal, removal. From the home that is. They don't want to talk to the kids and find out the problem. All loners have are themselves, and they gotta do what they gotta do.
