MelissaParticipantI don’t feel superior to other races. I go to the tanning bed and lie in the sun to get a tan because (like the skinny supermodel issue), people now generally feel that ‘pale, ashy’ skin is unattractive, due to the media. I don’t like the way I look without a tan. I look pale and sick. My racial background is German, Irish and American Indian, so I have almost black eyes and naturally dark brown hair, with a red tint when the sun hits it. So when I’m pale I look like I’ve got the flu. Also, tanning is like smoking: you know it’s dangerous, but the reality of the danger doesn’t faze most people because you can’t see the damage until it’s too late.

MelissaParticipantIn response to your ‘see how it feels’ comment. I am a ‘white’ 22 year old female, and I have ALWAYS known how racism feels. I grew up in the poor neighborhoods in my town, very multi-racial areas. I went to schools where there were almost equal numbers ( or so it seemed) of everyone from white, black, hispanic, and asian. People with darker skin tones are not the only ones who are affected negatively by racism. I can recall quite a few times when I have heard a racist slur come out of black girl and/or guy. Trust me, the words ‘white trash’ hurt me as much as the word ‘n****r’ hurts an African American. And ‘honkey’ has got to be the stupidest one yet. So yes, ‘white’ people know how it feels also. Please remember that the next time you complain about racism but turn around and make a nasty comment about someone else of another race.

MelissaParticipantI am a 22 yr. old ‘white’ female. I don’t think liking or dis-liking certain foods has anything to do with the color of our skin or ethnicity. I think it has a lot to do with how you were raised and what your parents made you eat or try. I grew up lower class (but AM NOT white trash) and I love what I call Southern food. Ex: brown beans, fried potatoes, greens, cornbread, biscuits, fried bologna, etc. A lot of people call this ‘soul food’. I guess it is soul food also, cause it’s great for the soul- whether you’re white, black, green, or purple. đ I think you’re friend is just afraid to try new things. You should invite her and her husband over and have dinner together. Ask her to try your favorite foods. It could start a great friendship.

MelissaParticipantI grew up and still live in Kentucky, which has a bad rep anyway. But here, a lot oof people refer to any poor white person as white trash. I resent and hate those words as much as an African-American hates the word n****r. I grew up lower class and in low income housing. My parents worked and were very intelligent- they just had hard luck. Not all poor white peole live in trailer parks, are barefoot and pregnant, and marry thier relatives. Although we were poor, we still had manners, and feelings. It seems as if recently, people are using the words ‘white trash’ as frequently as people used ‘n****r’ in the early part of the century. It is a VERY offensive term to a lot of people and should stop being used. I don’t know anyone personally who would call a person of another ethnic background a racist term, but no one cares or gasps when those words are said. It makes no sense.
