You’re correct, the Bible is older than Lincoln, Christopher Columbus, and Elvis, but so are several great works such as The Odyssey, (much older than the Bible in fact). In that way, the Bible can be used in literature classrooms as a ‘great work’. Still, while Christians may take the Bible to be historically accurate, many in the nation do not and as such, it cannot be considered in curriculum as a history text. Even among Christians some take the Bible literally and some contextually. In the same way, if this were a predominantly Muslim country, a Christian may not accept the Koran as historically accurate. In any context, the Bible in grade schools crosses the line between church and state and it is that line that defends the religious freedoms of all religions in this country.

I’m surprised about some of these assumptions. I am a white girl with several white girl friends and we drink beer; sometimes a couple some times a bit more. Why drink beer? We drink beer because it tastes good. In the NW we have several fine micro-breweries and drinking ‘good’ beer is valued in the way drinking wine is some places. Also many white girls are of Irish or German heritage and a great many fine beers come from both countries. For some, beer over liquor or wine may be cultural.

I would argue most Catholics do know what the rituals mean; I do. I went to Catholic school and asked questions as I had them. I think there is a misconception particularly amongst Protestants that Catholics are just blindly following and reciting at mass and beyond. While there may be some less knowledgeable Catholics, many are very aware of both the tradition and meanings behind these ‘rituals’.

I find it odd that someone would assume that pushing my hair behind my ears is because I think I am cute. I am a white woman and if it makes me look cute than I guess that’s a bonus. My hair is fine and it can get into my face and makes it hard to see. Also, if there is a breeze flowing hair tickles my nose and that can be annoying so I move it.

If your hair is in your face, you get it out of your face. While some may intend upon being rude that isn’t the majority. Hair is beautiful, if it gets a woman of any race positive attention good for her. When I flip my hair there is not dandruff or anything gross. I don’t believe brushing your hair should be done in private it’s just hair. I do know many men who find hair and I suppose the flipping of it very hot.

I am Catholic and I do pray the ‘Hail Mary’ sometimes. Praying the rosary is essentially meditating. It is acceptable to pray to saints and the Virgin Mary but no Catholic would argue that Mary is a Goddess. There are many misconceptions about Catholism and the role of saints and Mary. I appreciate that most protestants do not take the time to truly undersatand Catholic view because it is not the way they were raised. Still, Mary is the earthly mother of Christ and thus is glorified. Remember, EVERY Christian faith is born of Catholism so it would be to your advantage to educate yourself about where your version of Christianity comes from. Mary is sacred as the mother of God, and a holy example for all Christians; that’s where it ends.
