Anyone who sleeps around indiscriminately is worthy of the title ‘ho.’ That’s not to say that no one should have sex or that everyone should wait for marriage, but anyone who respects his or her body will be very selective in who they give it to. But to get to your question, my theory is that society has a double standard because women are supposed to be above promiscuity. There is an age-old notion that men have a natural urge to spread their seed as far as possible. Many people can’t handle the idea that women are also sexual beings. As the number of sexual partners grows, men are often thought of as not being able to help themselves, while women (as the mothers, the nurturers and the ‘gentle’ sex) are supposed to know better. Although many won’t admit it, and some haven’t even thought about it, I think women are held not to a double standard but to a higher standard because we are supposed to have more self-control.
