My dad was born into the faith and my mom is a convert. So I’ve got two totally different perspectives on it. I have experienced it from both sides, because I haven’t always been a practicing Mormon. The ‘planet’ is actually ‘Kolob,’ not Klobb. All it signifies is that part of heaven where God lives, nothing more. Mormons aren’t really into the New Age stuff. We’re actually more like mainstream Christians. We absolutely believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior. That’s the most important thing to us. ‘Latter-Day Saints’ refers to the ‘old’ meaning of Saints, which was simply a disciple or follower of Christ, not someone ‘holy’ as Catholics believe. So you could say that we’re the Church of Jesus Christ of his ‘modern-day followers’.

Excellent response from Chip. To this I would add (with the disclaimer that this is my opinion, not necessarily Church doctrine–and certainly not a perfect answer either): We all have many talents, many gifts, and not all are the same. For example, I’ve always believed that while women and men are certainly equal, and should be treat with equal respect, they have different roles. I grew up ‘Mormon’, and it was never taught or implied that African-descended people were inferior. But I did get the impression in our faith that God had a role that was different for African-descended people (at that time), even though he CERTAINLY loved (and loves) them as much as any other. I certainly value their contribution to the human race, as I believe all true Mormons do.
