MargoParticipantIt may well be an instinctive/biologial thing – if you’re visibly pregnant, this is the strongest possible proof that you are fertile, hence a good mate. Also, men may assume that a pregnant woman is already in a relationship and therefore ‘safe’ to flirt with.

MargoParticipantYou seem to be making several false assumptions and comparisons here. Firstly, people do not ‘choose’ to be gay. Many gay people suffer huge distress and misery coming to terms with their sexuality (largely as a result of society’s failure to accept them). Historically, homosexual men have faced disgrace, social ostracism and criminal prosecution (even execution), yet there have always been gay people. Do you honestly imagine anyone wakes up and says to themselves, ‘I know, I’m just not getting enough abuse and discrimination, I’ll choose to be gay’? Comparing homsexuality with use of alcohol is equally invalid. Sexuality is not something you chose, any more than skin color or gender is. Try putting ‘black’ where you have ‘homosexual’ and see if your comments still seem ‘reasoned’. Finally, since when has marriage been solely about raising kids? By your reasoning, no post-menopausal women, infertile men or women, those who have had vasectomies or people who don’t want children should be allowed to marry.
If you object to gay couples marrying in church, then you don’t have to attend the service. Other than that, it’s none of your business. There is no reason gay and lesbian couples should not enter into a legally recognized relationship so they can demonstrate their commitment to one another and preserve and inherit property, and be recognized as next of kin, just like any other loving and committed couple. Don’t mistake your own prejudices for absolute right or wrong.
By the way, a drunk driver is liable to harm himself and others. I never heard of anyone being fatally injured by two strangers registering their marriage.

MargoParticipantIf it was a criminal case, the robes are correct. In cases heard in public, the barristers will wear black gowns and gray/white wigs (traditionally horsehair but more commonly nylon). They are worn with white clip-on ‘tabs.’ No other fancy dress is required. The judge may have purple or red robes depending on his seniority. Robes are not worn in cases heard in private (all cases involving children and divorce) nor in the magistrates court (the lowest courts, which deal with less-serious criminal cases). There is currently an ongoing debate about whether the robes, etc should be scrapped or changed – however, it can make it easier to spot your ‘brief’ from a distance. My friends at the bar also say that prolonged wig-wearing tends to speed up hair-loss!

MargoParticipantIt is normal for criminal trials, and some other trials, in the Crown or County Courts. Barristers (advocates) wear wigs and black robes and white ‘tabs’ (clip on tie/cravat). Solicitors (different branch of the profession) who have qualified to appear in these courts wear robes but not wigs. I’m not sure what you mean by ‘colonial dress’ but there are no other ‘fancy’clothes. The Judge will have a red or purple robe, depending on seniority etc. Wigs and Gowns are not worn for private hearings (which includes any relating to divorce or children) nor in the Magistrates Court, which is the lower court which deals with less serious criminal matters. In major criminal trials which have involved children as defendents the judge will direct that robes and gowns are not worn, to make it less intimidating. There is current discussion within the legal profession about whether the court dress rules should be relaxed or changed.

MargoParticipantNo. Dreams are part of your subconcious mind, you don’t chose them. ALthough I’m not religious, I have always understood that sin involves deliberate or wilful wrongdoing, or deliberate failure to act the way you know is ‘right’, or that you believe ‘god’ would want you to do.
