Maybe you want an answer straight out of a Singaporean. In Ancient China, the lighter the skin of the Chinese, the more it meant they were rich and didn’t have to do manual labour, hence the flawless, fair skin. This implies that most Singaporeans don’t want to be seen as the ‘lower’ class because of the obvious discimination they will face if viewed as one. It is the same as a black man being promoted the last or hauled off to jail out of a room full of white convicts just because of his color. And by white we mean nice, fair smooth milky skin and not pale, dead, piggish pink skin like most westerners have, no offense, but it is meant literally. There are differences between the white-ness we want to achieve. In the Chinese culture, the darker the person, the more it means that that person is in a lower hierachy. Labourers and farmers in the ancient Chinese times were tanned and dark, while the richer ones were busy pursuing education and had servant do the tough jobs for them. This is evident, and I am surprised someone as old as you are cannot grasp a simple concept such as this. Please do not impose your western way of thinking on other cultures thinking that it is strange, or ridiculous. To understand other cultures you must think out of the box, use logic and facts and not base it on what you were taught as children in your culture. It is only through this way that we can all learn to embrace and understand different cultures.

I used to have a neighbor from India who moved to England to study when she was a kid. She eats beans, beans, beans. Everything she cooks has bloody beans inside, and it’s thanks to her I think beans are one of the most disgusting things in the world. I mean, she cooks like a whiz, and she bakes the best pies, but they have beans inside – and they’re all gross, disgusting, starchy lentil beans that taste like sawdust. So maybe it’s because many people have the perception that blacks are mostly Muslims, and that some countries like India include lots of beans in their diet and are full of black people, and so they’re supposedly ‘Muslims’ (the general ignorant perception of the masses) so they eat beans.

Hello? Has it ever occurred to you that those Asians that you’re talking about is but a minority? Many Asians are well-educated, have coherant English speaking and writing abilites, and are hardworking. Not to say that the other races aren’t hardworking, but most of the people who don’t grasp English as a proper language are those who come from the more rural areas in poorer countries with little access to facilities and this isn’t subjected to just Asian countries. Besides, English is one of the simplest languages I have ever learnt aside from Japanese, so many people don’t find it a problem. It’s all in the head.
