The short answer is: because we are not a color-blind society. People of color are still discriminated against by many people in our society. The discrimination may not be as blatant as it was in the past with school and housing segrigation and things like that, but it still exists. The discrimination and racism has gone underground and is harder to fight. Groups like the NAACP are needed to help in the fight against racail discrimination. I don’t see these organizations as promoting racial seperation, but as promoting equal oportunities for all Americans. As for the United Negro College Fund – there are many private scholarship programs to help specific groups of people go to college. This one just happens to help blacks.
