LisaMemberYes, U.S. intervention has been helpful in some cases, let’s not forget our role in overthrowing democratically elected governments in Central and South America because they disagreed with our interests, the numerous dictators (including Saddam Hussein) we have supported because they were willing to go along with us and, of course, the ‘equivalent to the founding fathers’ (the mujahadeen that became Al-Qaedah) that we trained and armed in our desire to make life difficult for the Soviets. America is an Imperialist power and does not follow any real ethical guidelines on its involvement other than maintaining its power.

LisaMemberAs an atheist, the reason I ‘celebrate’ Christmas is that’s when I am given time off from work to visit the family and friends I don’t normally get to see. For us, it is a ‘celebration’ of our connections to other people. Because the date of Christmas coincides with the traditional festival for Mithras – and many Christmas traditions are, in fact, based on pagan ritual, I like to share these facts with children so they can see how all people, no matter what background, enjoy the same type of celebration and sharing.

LisaMemberI am not Muslim, but a number of my friends in college were Muslims from Pakistan and various Middle Eastern countries. What I understood from them was that an arranged marriage was not required, but that many young people found this acceptable and went along with their family’s wishes. At the very least, they got approval of their prospective mate from their family. I knew only one Muslim who married against his family’s wishes. Although they threatened to disown him and cut off all contact, once he was married for a few months, they invited him and his new wife back home. As to multiple wives — in the United States it is illegal. In some countries (I believe Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are two) Muslims can have more than one wife, but they must have the means to support them. It is not a very common practice.

LisaMemberGiven the immense popularity of fantasy in all types of entertainment, I think its hard to say that ‘most’ Christians oppose it (unless they are very hypocritical and are surreptitiously consuming what they are opposing). Also, there are some fantasy works that are praised by Christians for their underlying Christian message (Lewis’ Narnia Chronicles are the most well-known). I think the opposition currently being heard against some fantasy movies and books has mostly to do with how loud some people complain and a desire to play up the controversy for extra publicity for the products in question.

LisaMemberAs you’ve gathered from all the other responses, what you experienced is not only not uncommon, it is pretty much accepted in most places. While I certainly sympathize with the retailers who are confronted with a shoplifting problem, I would like to see them try to do than to any other ‘group’ they felt was problematic and still get away with it. What if most of the shoplifters in my store have been female? Or black? Or elderly? Can I limit the number of each kind of person I am suspicious of? It certainly doesn’t seem right. If not only you but others of your age who frequent that lunch counter would stop going there (and make sure the management knows why), you could make a difference.

LisaMemberI’ve worked in a nursing home and have had numerous relatives in that field as well. I think one of the differences between the Asian and Western cultures is in what they consider the ‘best care’ for their elderly. Because many of us are raised to believe in the miracles of modern medicine and to trust the judgement of physicians and other ‘experts,’ putting an elderly person in a nursing home is thought of as doing what is right and best for the person. Asians, however, may not have that same kind of reverence for the judgement of experts. Also, many immigrant groups (not just Asians) do not like to be seen as unable to take care of their own people and/or do not trust the dominant culture to provide for them. This also contributes to the tendency to keep the elderly at home. More traditional lifestyles can make it easier to care for the elderly at home as well.

I don’t know if its possible for the media to be unbiased, given that choices must be made as to what to cover and what not cover. That said, however, I think our current news coverage could show more balance by questioning the ‘official’ views of different issues. Too much of what we see and read today is little more than press releases from government and business sources.
