Having lived in Guatemala for two years, i can understand why many Latinos might not tip. In guatemala and many latin american countries, the people serving the food are usually part of the family that owns the restaurant. They see the money regardless of whether the customer leaves a tip. It is not customary to tip in the villages. It is different in more touristy towns where the businesses are not family owned, and where foreigners are more common. Many people come to the US and don’t realize that servers are paid next to nothing because tips are included/assumed to supplement their income. I never got a paycheck–I was a waitress for two years. i didn’t see huge difference between races, but my restaurant was pretty upscale, and mostly served to white folks. and some of them were cheap as hell. and among my friends, those of us that have been servers tip much more than some of our other friends who believe that they are leaving a decent tip, when a server might see it as less than generous.
