I’m not 100 percent sure if we are wealthier or more successful on the average, although I guess we are. However, I *can* tell you why there are so many wealthier or successful Jews. It’s because learning/scholarship/reading have been an intrinsic part of Judaism for at least 2,000 years. Religious Jews try to spend hours and hours studying the Jewish Bible and related literature each day. Thus, Jews were literate back when most of Europe was illiterate. When Jews were permitted to move about in the larger (Christian, Muslim, etc.) culture, they already had the tradition of reading and studying. It was easy enough to transfer that skill to studying secular law, medicine, etc. Thus, many Jews found it not too great a stretch to go into professions that required education. Other reasons: at some points in history, Jews in Europe were not permitted to own land. Thus they had to learn a job skill that they could carry in their heads.
