I have to admit, it’s culturally endemic enough that Bill Cosby makes frequent references to it in his Stand up routines – especially ‘mothers’ carrying on conversations with no one ‘you gonna talk back to me, i’ll tell you whos teh boss… they you’ll be sorry you dared not ask me before you went out…’ I don’t know that i’ve ever actually seen this in real life, but it is present in African American comedy. Maybe that help understand what the question was driving at?

No one has replied to your message, which is sad. I am not native, but have my Master’s degree in Native studies, and thought at teh lest, I could offer you three books which offer professional opinions on this very topic. (My bias is that there is no way to separate religion from custom from language, as they all inform each other.) Vine Deloria. (Lakota, legal representative for many Indian issues). Almost anything he writes addresses retaining native culture, but the book I would suggest is ‘god is red’ (1970’s) and Spirit and Reason. Both have several articles that might help your students. Ward Churchill (very different voice from Deloria. much anger and frustration evident in his voice) ‘from a native Son’. great articles on how to retain ‘indian ness’ and what Indian identity means.

I’m also attracted to gay men. Often to my detriment, since obviously the ‘attraction’ isn’t mutual. But, generally friendship grows from it. I think one of teh reasons i’m sexually attracted to gay men (by stereotype) is that they tend to care more about their looks, fashion, and take more time to ‘impress’ – if you will. I like that men bother to know food and wine; artsy films, etc. and this is stereotypically ‘gay’ attitudes. Luckily for us, Gina, Metrosexual is in. 🙂 Queer eye for teh Straight Guy rules !
