KenMemberI don’t know if that is necessarily true. I find myself attracted to women who I know are lesbian or I later find out to be lesbian for reasons other than the chance to see two women together (I much prefer one-on-one relationships: less pressure). Of the places I frequent here in Chicago, I find the lesbian women I meet physically and emotionally attractive. They don’t seem to be as concerned with the image they present (I’m not saying they dress like bums). They don’t seem to be as worried about saying the right thing or doing the right thing. They just seem a bit more natural and down-to-earth and that’s why (along with the physical aspect) I find myself attracted to them. Talk about wishful thinking … I guess this is fodder for a little amateur pschology.

KenMemberMy theory on why you were more “acceptable” to black women is simple: Whites in this country are still viewed by many as the “oppressor,” and to a lot of black people, any intimate dealings with them is tantamount to treason. When a black man dates a white woman, many black men and women see this as sleeping with the enemy. Your Spanish heritage, however, in this country makes you a minority, and as such, you are (in their eyes) in the same boat as African Amnericans. (And in some respects, with regard to the way you may be treated in this nation, it’s true, although that is another issue.)
Also, many blacks claim a bit of Spanish heritage in their family tree. And when they look at places such as Puerto Rico, Cuba, etc., they see a lot of black faces. So they feel some kinship to you, and therefore accept you as “one of us.” So they have drawn up the lines: whites are the oppressor and African Americans, Spanish and other minorities are on the same side.
As for the stupid cliche, “Once you go black…” it is a saying that is based on the stupid stereotype that people of African descent are some sort of sexual superbeings, and that one sexual encounter with them makes you partial to them for life, ignoring the role that love and other emotions play in a sexual relationship. I for one don’t understand why blacks themselves would promote this stupid stereotype that reduces men to modern-day Mandingos (ask someone).

KenMemberWhen was the last time? Why, during every televison show with a predominantly black cast, such as programs on the WB Network (Sister, Sister, Steve Harvey, etc). Unfortunately, television producers and programmers feel that only blacks can deal with seeing a majority of blacks in a television commercial, so they schedule them during shows with what they believe to be large black appeal. They assume that all of the other “major” networks (CBS, NBC, ABC) appeal to mostly white audiences (and since the majority, if not all, of the shows on those networks feature predominantly white casts, I guess they’re right, so they run only commercials that are palatable (read white) to that audience. Never mind that I occasionally get a laugh or two out of Friends or Seinfeld or enjoy Law and Order or Homicide, and that there are more than a few other African Americans who enjoy them, too. A commercial featuring a predominantly black cast during those times would not be “in keeping with our target audience.”
As for why the actors/actresses were light in skin tone, it goes back to what is acceptable to white America. The producers (and makers of whatever product they’re selling) feel lighter-toned blacks are more acceptable to white Americans because they seem closer to their appearance and are less threatening. So you’ll probably never see a dark-skinned, fuller-lipped, broader-nosed African American man or woman selling aspirin on prime time on the “major networks.”
