I was in a similar situation that you're in when I got married. I'm a Wiccan and my husband is an atheist. Most of my family are small-town Christians and have not totally accepted my choice of religion. So they were a little weirded out when I told them that I was having a Wiccan ceremony. What I did was hammer out a 'toned-down' ceremony with vaguely Christian traditions (which were originally pagan) like passing the cup and a short prayer. The DJ played music from a video game soundtrack that sounded Celtic, but was really Japanese. The only thing that was really different was the guys' tuxes (Druid-like robes and capes), my Celtic-style gown, and the handfasting part, which the minister took great pains to explain. And my entrance music was CoCo Lee's 'Love Before Time.' All my relatives told me that it was the best wedding they've ever been to, so things worked out, even though Jesus stayed home.

I started questioning my faith after breaking off a relationship with an emotionally, verbally, and sexually abusive partner. The guy was a quadriplegic from spina bifida, and used his condition to manipulate people. He spread lies about our relationship in our church and the congregation, despite having known me for much longer and witnessed him bossing me around, believed him. I decided to leave the church in order to get my own head together and threw myself into volunteer work at the local rescue mission. Despite being the most dependable volunteer they had, they constantly 'tested' me to see if I was Christian enough for their standards. It turned me off to volunteering for them, even though I enjoyed the work immensely. The proverbial straw that broke the camel's back was during my grandmother's funeral, where a woman that went to our church told me that I needed to 'change' the man I was dating (and later married) because he is an atheist, even though he treated me better than any supposedly Christian man I had ever dated. At the time, I was researching other religions out of curiosity and found that Wicca and Taoism more closely fit into my belief system.

All Wiccans are witches, so, yes, all followers of Wicca practice witchcraft and come into contact with spiritual forces. However, Wiccans do not see the world or the spiritual realm in terms of either/or. Just like people, these forces are neither completely good nor completely evil. Those that abuse the powers granted to them or use it for selfish means usually are destroyed by them. Those that don't are not and are usually enhanced by them.

All Wiccan morals can be summarized in one sentence: 'As it harm none, do as you will.' This is known as the Wiccan Rede. As long as it hurts no one, do what you want. This allows for a lot more freedom than some religions, but also requires a lot more personal responsibility. To properly explain this innocuous-looking motto would require more space than would be prudent on this forum. There are a lot of essays discussing this concept, many of which can be found at http://www.witchvox.com.

I deal with this a lot, especially after I got married last month. ('How's married life, MRS. INGERSOLL?!' 'Same as co-habitating life, f***wit.') For reference, most of the people I deal with at work are female and get offended when you don't drop everything you're doing to chat with them. Part of my strategy of combating this is that I try to look busy all the time, even if it's just clicking on my mouse and staring purposely at my computer screen or bowing over some important looking papers. When I'm talking on the phone, the only attempt I make at communication is vague hand signals (mostly because I think holding two conversations is extremely rude to the other person on the phone). I also wear black, keep my 'weirder' artifacts on my desk (wooden cats, my dragon cake-topper, Puss in Boots doll), and play all kinds of unusual music on my computer, which clues most people into knowing that I'm probably not the type of person that's into idle chit-chat. When all this fails to deter someone that decides that they are my bestest friend, I decide to give him a taste of their own medicine. Not many people are interested in anime (Japanese cartoons), the martial arts, Luis Royo and Julie Bell (fantasy artists), or Magic: the Gathering (card game). I also read books that are thicker than my arm, so when they start trying to draw me into a discussion about Danielle Steele or Nicholas Sparks, their eyes immediately glaze over as soon as I utter 'intellectual investment' or 'literary magazine.'
