I used to live in North Carolina, in both a small town (Wilson) and in Raleigh, and I grew up in rural Kentucky. My advice is to stay out of small towns. The KKK is still around in rural North Carolina, they marched twice the year I moved there. Move to Raleigh, Durham or Charlotte. People in Southern small towns can be very bigoted and small-minded, but this is not necessarily true for all.
