The red dot(or bindi) is NOT supposed to be worn by UNMARRIED hindu girls. It is a sign of marriage , symbolizing that the woman is married and is worn by MARRIED hindu girls. When the husband dies, the widow (as per hindu religion) is not supposed to wear any dots(bindis) on her head, esp not the red ones. Unmarried girls normally wear black and other color bindis. In India this custom is still widely followed, even in the cities. But in US,UK etc its makeup.
