JoannaParticipantI am an Italian-American woman who is engaged to a black man. My position on this question is sort of odd, but here it is: When I have children, who will be biracial, I will strongly encourage them to date only black men and women. I have met many people involved in interracial relationships, and 90 percent of them to me are not based in love but on stereotypes and the desire to rebel. I have seen many cases where white women who date black men consistently put down black women, and degrade black culture as a whole. I have seen others who are involved with a black partner because of certain stereotypes of physical and sexual characteristics. Due to my experiences with other interracial couples, I would encourage my children to date within the black community, simply because it is often hard to tell whether the white partner is truly in it for love, or whether it is one of these other reasons.

JoannaParticipantI am a white woman who has an extensive network of Black friends. When I went to college, the only Black people I had learned about in school was Martin Luther King, Jr. and Harriet Tubman. When I went away to college, a Black man who befriended me reccommended that I read The Autobiography of Malcolm X. I read the book, and have been expanding my knowlege of Black history and cultures since. Some other books my Black friends have reccommended to me are: Soul on Ice by Eldrige Cleaver and Black Boy by Richard Wright. In addition, try reading some books by Derrick Bell (sp?) I hope these reccomendations will be helpful in getting you started in your quest to learn more about Black history, they certainly helped me.

JoannaParticipantI have a friend who used to be a member of the Hebrew Israelites, an Afrocentric religion. According to the Israelites, Africans and African Americans are the true descendants of the original 12 tribes of Israel. They wear the Star of David to identify themselves as the true sons and daughters of Israel. For more information about the Israelites, you can see the web site http://www.12tribes.com. That site describes in detail the beliefs of the Israelites and provides scriptural passages to back up their beliefs. In addition, many Rastafarians wear the Star of David.

JoannaParticipantI could be mistaken, but I know there is an Afrocentric religious group known as the Israelites. According to the Israelites the true descendants of the Hebrew Israelites of the Bible are Africans and African-Americans. Since they believe they are the true descendents of the tribes of Israel, they have the right to wear the Star of David. To learn more about the Israelites go to http://www.12tribes.com Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this could be the explanation.
