As a Native New Yorker, I know that we as Black people have had implacable enemies in the Italian and Irish-American communities. Their hatred of us runs deep, probably because Italians, Irish and Blacks shared the same neighborhoods, schools, and moreover, jobs. Construction for one. Competition made it easy for groups to blame each other. Italian-Americans started to 'blend in', so I believe they had to disassociate with anything that made them remember they were struggling in the past. I notice that this racism is most prevalent in N.Y. and Boston....at one time, same neighborhoods, so hatred arose. My mother still has great predjudice against Italian-Americans, and I admit I have some of the same feelings towards them, because of the racially-linked murders involving Black men at the hands of Italian and Irish thugs in the 80's. The Italians dress a lot like us, and like hip-hop, but boy....see the true colors when you date an Italian and meet the family, like my friend did. No way I would.
