I have been hard of hearing since birth. My parents are loving and never treated me badly because of my condition. They have always been there when I’ve needed them and worked resolve troubles at school related to my problem. I don’t hate myself but often wonder what my life would be like if my hearing was better – I would probably be more outgoing and have more friends and better self-esteem. I don’t hate G-d for my situation but sometimes wonder why he was chosen me to carry this burden. I often thank G-d for the quality of my hearing, because I am not at all deaf and have better hearing than all of the hard-of-hearing people I have ever known. When I listen to beautiful music I sometimes say a Jewish prayer called the Shehechiyanu which in English means: ‘Blessed art Thou, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has kept us alive and sustained us and enabled us to reach this season’. I try to see the small miracles in life and to thank G-d for them.
