HollyMemberI love cats and have a white kitty with gray markings and she is adored. I have many black friends that love cats, and I have some white friends that don’t. Nevertheless, I will agree with you that it seems that a lot of African Americans don’t like cats. When I was small I was the only one in my family who liked cats, but I begged for one; my father got me one when I was eight. From what I gather, the general consensus seems to be among those that don’t like cats (of all races) is that they think that cats are sneaky (which we’ll have to admit they are); some can’t stand the thought of a cat jumping on their kitchen table. My mother’s reason was that cats ‘suck the breath’ out of newborn baby’s mouths! (lol) This seems to be common among the older generation.

Consider Jesus’ words at Matt. 5:17 ‘Do not think I came to destroy the Law of the Prophets. I came not to destroy, but to fulfill; for truly I say to you that sooner would heaven and earth pass away than for one smallest letter or one particle of a letter to pass away from the Law by any means and not all things take place. Whoever, therefore, breaks one of the least commandments and teaches mankind to that effect, he will be called ‘least’ in relation to the kingdom of the heavens.’ The same moral standards of the Law still remain in effect today, the way in which we obey them in our lives is different. Romans 6:15-17 says: ‘Does this mean that now we can go ahead and sin and not worry about it? (for our salvation does not depend on keeping the Law, but on recieving God’s grace.) Of course not!…you can choose sin (with death) or obedience (with acquittal)…thank God that though you once chose to be slaves of sin, now you have obeyed with all your heart the teaching to which God has committed you.’ (TLB) Salvation still depends on our obeying God’s comands. Without Jesus’ ransom sacrifice we would not be able to choose salvation by means of our obedience to God. 1Corinthans 6:9 warns us: ‘Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves…will inherit God’s kingdom.’ It is noteworthy that this scripture encompases many groups of people, not just homosexuals. We ALL do well to heed this warning from the Bible.

Abraham once had similar feelings: ‘Will you really sweep away the righteous with the wicked?…Is the Judge of all the earth not going to do what is right? (Genisis 18:23-25) Consider, though, what the Bible tells us regarding our creator: ‘The Rock, perfect is his activity, for all his ways are justice.’ (Deuteronomy 32:4.) Also Psalms 67:1-4: ‘God himself will show us favor and bless us…Your salvation even among all the nations…Let national groups rejoice and cry out joyfully, for you will lead them.’ So we see,God will do what is right regarding the lives of ALL people. Nevertheless, some will be left out,but not because of the unrighteousness of God. Jesus warned during his Sermon on the mount: ‘Go in through the narrow gate; because broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are the ones going in through it; whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it.’ (Matt.7:13,14.) Is this because God does not want everyone to have life? Rather:’…He does not desire any to be destroyed, but desires all to attain to repentance.’ (2Peter 3:9B.) Yet, responsibility comes with serving God. 1 John 1:4 clearly states: ‘He that says: ‘ I have come to know him,’ and yet is not observing his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in this person.’ Think of today’s ‘Christian’ religions: Do they base their teachings ont ehe Bible and walk as Jesus walked or are they like what is spoken of in Romans 10:2 and 3 where the apostle Paul says: ‘ For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God; but not according to accurate knowledge; for, because of not knowing the righteousness of God, but seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.’ So, it is obvious what Jesus meant when he spoke of the broad and spacious road that many would follow. But what of non-Christian religions. God holds out his invitation to all as we read in Psalms. Jesus’ followers in his day declared this news as they were instructed to do by Jesus. ‘This good news of the kingdom wil be preached in ALL THE INHABITED EARTH for a witness to ALL THE NATIONS; and then the end will come.’ (Matt.24:14) So, ther is no need to fear; all people will be given an equal opportunity to come to know God and recieve salvation!

It does tell us who God is, explaining that he has a name and who he is: ‘That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.'(Psalms 83:18.) In the bible, Jesus is described as God’s son, evidently because he was God’s first creation: ‘ After being baptized Jesus immediately came up from the water; and, look! the heavens were opened up, and he saw descending like a dove God’s spirit coming upon him. Look! Also, there was a voice from the heavens that said: This is my Son, the beloved, whom I have approved.’ (Matthew 3:16, 17.) Colosians 1:15, 16 goes on to say of Jesus: He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; because by means of him all other things were created in the heavens and upon the earth …’ As for the Holy Spirit, the Bible does not describe this as a person, but rather as God’s active force. An example might be the way electricity is the FORCE that enables our computers to work and so forth. Holy Spirit was poured out upon Jesus’ apostles on the day of the festival at Pentecost. Acts 2:3,4 further explains: And tongues as if of fire became visible to them and were distributed about , and one sat upon each one of them, and the all became filled with holy spirit and started to speak with different toungues, just as the spirit was granting them to make utterance.’ This speaking in tongues, though, was not what one might think of as often seen in modern-day churches where people seem to be going a little mad, so to speak; but rather it was the ability given to them to communicate in different languages so that they could preach to others. Acts continues: ‘And yet, how is it we are hearing, each one of us, his own language in which we were born…Cretans and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our tongues the magnificent things of God.’ (Acts 2:8 then picking up at vrs. 11.) There are many other scriptures that explain all of this in further detail; yet I hope these will shed some light on the subject from a biblical standpoint.
