From talking to people in tis particular socio-economic group (including family members), they were extremely distrustful of Gore, seeing him as a liar and worse, a city slicker. Perhaps, too, on some level they found his intellect threatening as well as his positions on gun control, abortion and race relations. Nothing is more frightening to lower-class residents of rural communities than a ‘liberal’ who wants to change the status quo. I can’t see where any real consideration to the issues was given, only the expectation that a ‘good ‘ol boy’ like Bush would somehow restore ‘morality’ to the White House and again subsidize rural interests and expand the military…a return to the Reagan/Bush years and the rural folks’ ultra-conservative (and hypocritical) comfort zone. In effect, all’s right with the world as long I can still tote a shotgun and the president reminds me of my cousin. Believe it or not, getting to the point where you actually own your own trailer is living high on the hog for some people…and once they have that little bit, that’s their world and they don’t know/don’t care what happens beyond the next county. .
