One of the most irritating things about being on benefits long term is that better-off relatives buy you expensive clothing rather than give you half that amount in cash toward the winter fuel bill, or a couple of cheaper, more durable garments. Having said that, fake designer gear is sold very cheaply in certain street markets, and you’d often have to be a label head to spot the difference. Sometimes when the police seize ripped-off designer goods, they give it to one of the big charities, and it can end up on the backs of people on welfare, or being worn by refugees.

I’m surprised nobody’s answered this one already. Even if you live in a place with no seasonal variations to the weather, which I doubt, as you might get the prevailing wind changing, you will still find there are variations in the levels of light and dark each day. So instead of celebrating the start of weather dry enough to cut hay, you might celebrate the time of year when the days are short enough for you to sleep easily without needing thick curtains or a blindfold. Or you might celebrate a time when you have enough daylight hours to see without needing the light on after work/school. The wheel of the year is related to a seasonal pattern, but it needn’t necessarily reflect agricultural seasons – it can be related to what you personally see people around you doing/experiencing at certain times – eg Lughnasadh (trad start of harvest, approx, beginning of August in Europe)is also the time of students gettting their exam results and dedcidng what happens next.

The contrast between 2 stereotypical extremes makes the pair’s actions more amusing or memorable, that’s all.

‘I have a question for you as well: ‘Why do white women harass black men by assuming that…we are going to…rape you on the street in broad daylight?’ duh! put it this way, I’m 5’0′, female and the majority of afro-carribean males (even children)are taller, stronger, and more likely to be with one of their friends than I am. Rape isn’t the only thing I fear, mugging or assault is pretty darn frequent too in my area (Brixton). This goes for my feelings about white or Asian men in the street too. And if you follow me too close of course I’m going to start thinking you want to scare me, you insensitive git!

consider the age limits in other countries. In the UK, at 16 you may drink cider or perry with a main meal in a pub, but nothing stronger or on its own until you reach 18. At 16 you may leave home (if your parents give permission), marry(with parental consent), consent to sex or be raped (instead of sexually assaulted), work (limited hours), leave full-time education, biut you still can’t vote or legally consent to sex if you’re a gay male until the age of 18.
