GlennMemberAlthough I have lived and traveled in the Republic of Turkey (99% Muslim) for more than 15 years , am married to a Muslim, and have a teenage daughter who has attended local public schools from elementary school age on, I have never heard of such a thing being done in this country. It is NOT peculiar to Islam nor is it mandated in the Koran. Female circumcision is a cultural practice which is attributed to Islam in order to provide religious justification for its continuation. It short, it’s a myth and one which I believe is peculiar to the African continent.

GlennMemberThere is an erroneous perception among Blacks that the Democratic Pary has been the party which has ‘done the most’ for them. It began during the Great Depression during FDR’s term. Although research will show that FDR initiated nothing that shows he enacted any legislation or even gave a speech that was directed specifically to Blacks, his wife DID. It was through her activities against lynching and in support of equal rights, that the popularity of the D.P. with Blacks started. Prior to that Blacks supported the Republicans (the party of Abraham Lincoln). Later H.S. Truman desegrated the U.S. Armed Forces by executive order, an action which displeased far more Democrats (particularly in the South) than it did Republicans. Still the D.P. in general received credit for it. Later J.F.K., mostly through the actions of R.F.K, was perceived as being for civil rights although he, like F.D.R. did not little substantive to earn it. His use of the National Guard in the southern states was not so much an indicator that he was ‘for’ Blacks but that he would not tolerate insurrection within the D.P. by southern Democrats and challenges to the authority of the federal government. NOTE: that D.D.E., a Republican, can be shown to have down more than J.F.K. Thurgood Marshall, an important man within the NAACP, was not appointed by a Democrat. The ‘Great Society’ programs of L.B.J. are arugably the first substantive actions by a U.S. president, after Lincoln and Truman, which can be said, fairly or unfairly, to be of direct benefit to Blacks. Again, this legislation was passed in spite of the strident opposition of the majority southern Democratic Party rank and file. NOTE: that R.M. Nixon could also be said to have done more that benefited Blacks than any subesquent Democrat. In short, Democrats rightly or wrongly are PERCEIVED as being the Black man’s party. Individuals such as Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and popular (though inaccurate history) history ensure that this perception continues. Note that a Republican president, G.W.B, has appointed more Blacks to positions of great responsibility and visibility than ALL previous U.S. presidents. Yet, he is still perceived as a virulent racist by many.

GlennMemberIt isn’t about bring the ‘ghetto’ with them. It’s about bringing what the individual grew up with (which is an integral part of the individual). This is no different than someone, who raised in an environment in which country music and the wearing of ‘cowboy hats and boots’ was the norm, or classical music and jazz, and the ‘preppie/Ivy league’ style of dress is the norm, continues to enjoy a type music and style of dress where ever they go. It IS ‘them’. As to the rest, well, all blacks don’t do such things and all blacks do not enjoy the same type of music. At least literally none of the blacks I know uniformly fit such a sterotype.
