One theory is that it is a word of Wolof origin, Wolof is a language of Senegal which is in West Africa. In Wolof one way of describing a white person is ‘Xonq nopp’ xonq (pronounced honk more or less) is red and nopp is ears. It is somewhat derogatory but not very in that it is describing what white people’s ears look like. The suffix ‘aay’ is how to say ‘ish’ so it may be that that is also an explanation.
