Perhaps for the same reason some people refer to themselves as ‘Italian-Americans’:-) I have sat in a room full of Blacks of varying ages and heard them say that some preferred ‘Black’, some preferred ‘African-American’ and some preferred ‘Negro’. Different generations preferred different ‘labels’.
