It’s not that we rarely pass gas, it’s that we rarely make a production of passing gas the way men do. I think girls have been brought up to think that it’s rude, gross, and generally unladylike. As a result, we do it quietly and, if possible, remove ourselves from social situations before doing so by going to the bathroom (or any other unoccupied room), going to another aisle in the store, etc.
