Many Unitarian Universalist congregations, some United Methodist churches and other liberal religious groups are using the label ‘open and affirming’ to signify that they not only tolerate but actively welcome and support gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered folks, and actively work for justice for sexual justice and les/bi/gay rights. Blessings on your quest.

In the Wiccan and other Pagan groups that I’ve come in contact with, the majority of the members are white, but black members are present in small numbers and welcomed. While much of Wicca is based on Celtic myths and God/desses, eclectic groups work with Pantheons from all over the world, including African Diasporic traditions. Just realize that if you join most Wiccan groups you will be in the minority – often a minority of one. But I’ve found that I’m not treated as a token, for all of that.

in reply to: Are we united in United Nations festivities? #39905

Hello to your school. Here in the United States I have never seen a celebration in schools or cities/towns for United Nations Day. It may be listed on ‘official’ days — but so many things are, such as ‘National Pickle Relish Week’ (!) that no one really pays much attention. On the other hand, my church, the Unitarian Universalists, to which perhaps 800,000 North Americans belong, has several days of festivities and other programs, since this church firmly supports most United Nations programs, such as UNICEF. These activities are persued within the church community, though.

in reply to: Reproduction the Bottom Line? #35021

What part of gayness strikes you as ‘not normal?’ It sounds like you think having sex with people of the same sex is not normal. You have to first wonder, Why do people, ANY people, have sex? Reproduction is only a very small part of the picture. How many times, in a heterosexual marriage, do the partners make love for no other reason than to have a baby? No, sex is also to express our love for our partner, to comfort and receive comfort, for fun, for excitement, for reassurance, for warmth, even for spiritual reasons. If sex were only for reproduction, women would have no sex after menopause or during pregnancy, and after having say, 2 children, no one would ever have sex again. For every reason except reproduction, same-gender sex can be as fulfilling as opposite gender sex — if the particpants want. Not only gays believe that gay sex is normal and natural, many, many straight people, bisexuals, and celibate people believe it is also. If you believe that God created humans, then God created apes, pigeons, dolphin, beetles, dogs, pigs, and gerbils…all of which (among thousands more species) practice same-sex relations. Obviously, nothing could be more natural. Your question does not reflect the reality of either sex or nature, but rather what sounds like misguided religious bias. Keep questioning, just make sure you listen to the answers you get.
