I’m a 15-year-old lesbian who came out a little more than a year ago. I have enjoyed wonderfully supportive responses from everyone I’ve come out to. I came out to my mother, and she was great – ‘I love you no matter what,’ etc. I came out to my entire high school last spring in an editorial in the school newspaper titled ‘Lesbian Freshman Speaks Out.’ I think I shocked some people, but nobody has been overtly hostile – luckily. I’m having a wonderful time. I’m so glad I’ve come out, because it’s pretty bad being in the closet. I was isolated and alone, I had no one to talk to, I couldn’t be my true self to anyone. I’m much happier now. I’m very comfortable being out – I out myself as much as possible. I try to be casual about it. Usually I mention my girlfriend, or some of my activist work in the gay rights movement. I respond honestly to courteous questions and try to answer people’s concerns.
