    It exists, but it is eroding. Education and urbanization are eroding it. Younger, educated people in big cities are not even aware of the different caste names, and are not interested in the caste of their collegues or classmates. Older people who grew up in villages where everybody knew everyone else’s castes, and interacted appropriately are more aware of it. But they adapt to modern society, and don’t stick to the old rules. One area where it still plays an important part is in marriages. Arranged marriages are almost always between people of the same caste. Where the boy and girl choose each other, if they are of different caste, the response of the parents varies widely. If the families are living in a big city, and are educated, it causes barely a ripple. If the parents are living in a small village, with a strong community, then the response can be draconic.
