E-VillaParticipantWho told you AIDS was an Africa only epidemic? My father died of AIDS as early as 1987. He was infected in a Mexican hospital with contaminated blood from a Mexican donor. I see no white folk’s hand in here!! It was way before AIDS had any significant impact on Africa’s public health issues. In fact more Americans than anyone else at the time were getting infected and dying from the disease. Even though AIDS was first pinpointed among certain population groups, it’s been a long, long time since it crossed the lines of age, gender, sexual habits/orientation, race, geographical location, etc. for the majority of countries. And in countries where it has not affected throughout the broad spectrum of different social groups is no greater consolation. Since no social group is isolated from the whole of the society, those groups left behind by education, awareness & prevention programs could potentially become the weakest link from which the disease would spread to the entire society. This may well be Mexico’s case: http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/pls/impreso/noticia.html?id_nota=8001&tabla=miami There many non-African countries/regions being devastated by AIDS as well: Honduras, Haiti, Thailand, Cambodia. And many others on the road of devastation: India, China, Indonesia, Former Soviet countries, etc. Those countries/societies not doing their homework in regards to safe sex education, drug users education, safe medical material handling, etc. are suffering or will suffer the spread of AIDS. Unfortunately this has been the case of many African countries.
