DotParticipantJ., you are definitely missing out on some serious tender, love and care in this world. Look a little closer to your God to find it. You seemed to have put labels and conditions on just about every living soul that God created. It’s very shameful. This is why many white people feel guilt. This, my sisters and brothers of the rainbow, is a perfect example of racism. Thank you, J., for giving us this learning experience. Many white people feel guilty because, I’m sorry to say, but this USED to be the general consensus toward people during the slavery era, and this man proves that this attitude still exists. I can almost see Jesus Christ now, he’s probably sobbing quietly because one of his children just crucified a whole race of his other children, and called His daugters fat cows. J., if you have any love in that heart of yours, the next time your friend shows his partner the back of his hand, be a real man and report him to the police for domestic violence. Men like that are in need of some serious lessons to be learned. You may need to go with him if you think this is an appropriate way to treat someone you love.

DotParticipantAs long as you are experiencing privilege because of your White skin, then you are contributing to racism. Racism isn’t about how you see yourself, it’s about how others see you. The ‘tone’ has already been set. No one can get away from it now. We just have to try to come together to change it.

DotParticipantThe dominant structure of society is that which white people have built. Are things really changing? I hope to be so lucky to see it happen in my lifetime. So there are a couple of African American focussed television stations. It’s about f$@!#^% time! I think there should be more, but don’t stop with the African American race. The European race is too dominant. We will never settle for the background for too long. We have pushed and shoved our weight around for far too long, and will continue to do so whenever we feel threatened. As for Native American’s and people who are Jewish not feeling the pain of racism. (Or whining as you’ve put it.) Are you witnessing the pain that others have? Are you meeting people where they’re at? You’re a social worker right? So am I. Work with society more babe. Do you know how hard it is for people of color to get up and MOVE ON when they are plauged with racism almost everyday of their lives? How can they do it with ease when they keep being shoved down? As White people we need to understand this, cuz we’re the ones that are shoving them down. I suppose every individual is different. But I’m talking about entire races.

DotParticipantIt is clear to me that you are facing something as old as the hills: typical racism. The white women you talked about could be dealing with their own insecurities with themselves, so for them to feel that they have some worth, they put others down.
I was raised on a small farm, so bear with me on this little analogy: The littlest chicken always used to get pecked at the most by the other chickens. He was the one that was most ‘different.’ The others would peck his tail feathers until he bled. It seems as if society is just a bunch of chickens trying to -up everyone else. We try to ‘look’ important, when all of the time we’re just jealous of everyone else. One reason those women could be acting the way they are is that your difference is easy to see.
Racism has been taught to white folks for generations. It’s not unusual for you to see this behavior in white women. We were raised to act like this. There aren’t many white people who ‘get’ this.
I was going to respond to the other reply, but then I thought, naw. It would be pointless. You’re not missing anything, hon. You’ve hit it on the nose. So instead of looking at us white folks as being all in the same club, think about that again. We’re not. We don’t really have a group committment to each other. We’re all just trying to look out for No. 1. Try to understand that we’ve been raised to be racist. That is all we know how to be, until we learn differently. Many of us haven’t looked at life from a person of color’s view. We don’t want to; it’s too painful. We see your pride, and it threatens us. So we have to somehow find a pride of our own, but it can never be genuine enough for us. Most of us don’t really know what our pride looks like. So we keep putting Band-Aids over our own hurts. The healing comes when we reclaim our own spirit, not by trying to break someone else’s. So remember that next time you feel pain from a white person. It’s about them, not you, sweetie.

DotParticipantYou said, ‘I hope and pray that people realize the relationship God intended for men and women was only for men and women, not men and men or women and women. I won’t discriminate against gay people as people, but I will not support laws or fundraisers to support gay marriages and such because that would go against everything I believe in. I’m sorry. So, no, homosexuals shouldn’t be discriminated against any more than any other group for getting jobs, etc., but that doesn’t mean I support it at all.’ First of all, how do you know what God is thinking? How do you know what kind of relationship God intends people to have? Do you think that you have ‘arrived’ to know the mind of God? Do you think that God’s WHOLE mind has been wrapped up in one Book? The Bible? I used to be fundamentalist. I shutter to view myself as a Christian, because you’re right. It IS a shame that some people have turned Christianity into a beast. They have taken their understanding of the world and imposed it on being ‘God’s will’, therefore dictating it to the rest of humanity. Is your understanding of ‘God’s will’ really God’s will? Or is it the will of Christianity? Do you seperate the two? Maybe not since Christians believe that they are ‘Christ-like’. I am still a believer and a follower of Jesus Christ. I don’t believe that God has a sexual preference, nor do I believe that who a person has sex with is going to make one ‘lick’ of difference when it comes to ‘saving’ the world. You said that you can’t support different sexual orientations. Well then my sister, how can you love your neighbor as yourself? You must not support yourself then. So let’s see, you can’t support it. That must mean that you have discerned against it, right? Meaning that you can discriminate between what you do support and what you don’t support. If you’re not supporting it, then you are discriminating against it. Choose your words more carefully. You tollerate us and you have to live in this world with us, and you believe that we don’t really love God, or are in Her/His will because we don’t fit in your mindset of how Her/His children should be. My dear, you are nailing our hands and crucifing us every time you tell us that you will not support us. You may call it holding us accountable to your views. But I don’t see how your views are supporting justice. In fact, I see them as discriminating against justice.
