Black people like Chinese food because the Chinese will set-up a restaurant in the black community more often than other cultures. If you go to the Southwest you would ask why black people there love Mexican food. That’s because Mexicans will set-up a fast food stand or restaurant in the black community. We do spend money on good food, that’s why we encourage the Greek, the japanese and others to bring their cuisines to the ghetto…they’ll get rich! Oh by the way, believe me we would love to have other foods in our community, but for the time being, we are fighting just to get grocery stores!

Women from Latin countries believe in marriage more than women from the West. They don’t have the ‘hang-ups’ we have here. Being married in most Latin countries is an honor…not a choice, per se.

‘oppress the oppresser?’ Maybe you should really look up the word ‘oppress.’ I too am familiar with those movies. But, I did not see that Steve Martin was experiencing ‘burden,’ ‘depression,’ or ‘tyranny’ (synonyms of oppressed) while working with Queen Latifah. A matter of fact, I bet he was oppressed ‘all the way to the bank’ working with an academy award nominated movie star.

You made me laugh…the sister got a point, sister. White folks have made a mess out of the psyche of black folks in this country…after 250 years of slavery (1619 – 1865), and 100 years of ‘jim crow,’ (1865 – 1965), and 40 years of still exclusionary, institutional racism, give the lady a break. At least she was brave enough to educate you folks to our ‘sick secrets.’ Sometimes it is good to just LISTEN and LEARN, and bring some HEALING!!!

in reply to: Is ‘ma’am’ an insult to a black woman? #37410

Hmmm…First of all, the word ‘ma’am’ is short for madam..it’s used quite frequently among those who live in the southern regions of the US…keeping to the ‘politeness’ of the original word, thus ‘madam.’ The word is freely used among both blacks and whites in my experience…so it does not ‘belong’ to one race of people. I hear ‘yes, ma’am’ or when answering an elder…’ma’am. BUT, what the black woman was offended by…and you say it is not the first time…was your attitude when you used the word ma’am…especially if you used it at the beginning of a sentence…it’s considered rude and a social offense, a sign of impatience. Do you work for the local gas company?
