DeboraParticipantPork is not allowed for Muslims. Pigs are considered unclean. I don’t know why a Muslim would touch a package of pork, even trying to get to something else- for myself, I would not bother with three sets of gloves, I would rather leave whatever is under the pork chops alone. There is a misconception by some that Muslims deny themselves pork for ascetic reasons. This is not the case. Nor is there any kind of spirituality involved – pigs are just considered unclean – touching pork for Muslims, is closer to touching dung than to touching something ‘clean,’ like beef or chicken. Muslims tend to wonder why Christians eat pig meat, because Jesus never said in the Gospels that it was OK to eat pork.

DeboraParticipantIn my experience, most elderly- not in a nursing home- are more understanding, compassionate, experienced (by definition), and tolerant than younger people. I worked in a nursing home when I was a teenager, and it didn’t take me long to realize that these people felt impotent in their surroundings, in some cases. This led to lots of ‘acting out.’ In other cases, they were simply not capable of controlling what came out of their mouths: rude maybe, but always honest. The best way to deal with the elderly in a nursing home is to treat them like you want to be treated, and let everything else roll off your back. Think of it as karma that’ll come back to you one day, God willing. Phillip, whether or not old people are rude, you should probably learn to keep your mouth shut. Defending the cashier does not necessarily mean attacking (albeit only verbally) a lady who is 3X your age. When you’ve survived 72 years, and are still capable of walking into a grocery store to buy your own stuff, you should be granted a little leeway in the ‘manners’ department, too.

DeboraParticipantThe contract protects the woman by its contents. It could have provisions about doweries, property, standards of living. It could have a clause about the woman’s wish to remain in the work force. It could contain standards by which a man should treat his wife (and vice versa), or other ‘deal breakers.’ These standards by which a woman should be treated are taken for granted in this country (but sometimes insufficient-for all the abused and poor women in the country), but are not taken for granted in Islam. I believe the ‘religious contract’ you’re describing is the wedding and ceremony, which is, of course, also vital to the marriage, but does not legally protect the woman like a good marriage contract will.

DeboraParticipantFemale circumcision is not condoned by Islam, though many ‘Islamic’ cultures condone the practice, and have justified it by saying it is a requirement of the religion. Western media will also blame Islam for the practice of female circumcision. Female circumcision is a throwback to pre-Islamic times, and because of the general misogynistic nature of the cultures, it has survived to this day. Male circumcision IS a requirement of Islam, (as well as of other religions, and this is generally taken care of at birth). I do not know of any Western doctor who would agree to perform such a function on a female, Muslim or not.

DeboraParticipantGood question. The fact is, Muslims were slow to be especially vocal condemning terrorism- this is because many Muslims in this country were afraid to say anything for fear of backlash. However, American Muslims have been increasingly vocal condemning such acts, but the condemnations don’t seem to make it to CNN or FoxNews as efficiently as anti-Islam rhetoric does. If you go to the Council of American and Islamic Relations website, (CAIR) at http://www.cair-net.org, and do a search, you will find plenty of press releases condemning terrorist acts. There is also a petition floating around the internet signed by at least 100,000 Muslims condemning terrorist acts.
