DarrenParticipantThe focus on status and status symbols is an American, not an African-American, phenomenon. In the United States wealth is so often its own reward, and those with it are generally held in higher regard than those without it. So, if you at least look like someone with money, then in our class-conscious society you’ll get at least that much more respect–whether you’re black, white, brown or Asian.

DarrenParticipantThose of us who vote Democratic likely do so for the same reason you vote as you do. Firstly, how people vote is often influenced by family tradition–how their parents, grandparents and so on vote or voted. Secondly, people vote for the candidate or party they think is more likely to serve their interests. Most black voters view the Democratic Party as the one who best represents their interests, which include ending racial discrimination in education, housing, lending, hiring, insurance, health care, etc.

DarrenParticipantExcuse me for sounding like Dr. Phil. You say men compliment you on your looks but that you’re not approached, which is a contradiction. If they’re taking the time to tell you you’re beautiful you ARE being approached. I’m wondering how old these guys are. Are they in your age group or older? If they’re older, age could be an issue. Maybe they’re attached or married and don’t intend to take it any further. I’m also wondering how you’re handling the men who approach you and how you handle compliments. Maybe a friend or a relative could tag along with you when you go out, watch how you interact with men, then give you feedback. Apparently, you’re at least somewhat interested in men who’ve approached you. Have you ever considered doing the approaching? Forget what you’ve heard or read. Many guys like being approached, especially by attractive women. Come on, this is the 2K’s. In a lion’s pride, it’s the lionesses, not the lion, who hunts. Be a lioness and get your game, Gir-r-rl! Oh, unlike the lioness, you’re not expected to share.

DarrenParticipantSo many forums indicate that many white Americans feel as you do. The black Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitts has made interesting observations on this issue. You may want to e-mail him at lpitts@herald.com or seek his articles on this issue in the archives at http://www.Miami.com. I’ll try to shed light on this issue within the 150-word limit. Race/ethnic labels are often needed for surveys and other purposes. For example, try physically describing someone of another race or ethnicity without referring to the same. It can’t be done. Also, race labels are an effect of racism, not the cause. People choosing labels for themselves such as ‘African-American,’ ‘Chinese-American,’ ‘Mexican-American’ or whatever–which, by the way, is their God-given right–does not cause racial hostility or separation anymore than smoke causes fire. Consider the racial labels(slurs)long in use before the hyphenated ones, the ones ‘nice’ bigots never use–at least not publicly. Again, bigots’ choice labels for blacks, whites, Jews, nonblack Hispanics, Asians, etc., are a product–not a cause–of racial or ethnic hostility.
