I usually get defensive. If I overhear it on the street, it feels like it cuts to the bone and I start to think ‘if only they could understand what my friends and I are all about, then they wouldn’t say such things’. If it’s said to my face, I’ll try to stay calm and rational yet it still cuts to the bone; not so much the criticisms, but the attitude behind them. If it’s over an internet chatboard that I frequent, I’ll usually go on a mission to ‘set them straight’. Then it turns into a long drawn out battle that wears me out. But I must also remind myself that before I was a Christian, I used to do the same things. Now that I think about it, I vaguely remember spitting in a girl’s Bible back in junior high. It just goes to show that anyone can come around.
