Ever since LBJ signed the Civil Rights Bill in 1964 and Dixiecrats integrated into the Republican Party, black voting patterns have trended heavily Democratic. Since the majority of America’s black population has roots in the South, we are more aware of the Republican party’s welcoming of these people who opposed Civil Rights and continued association with groups with racist agendas are reasons for us to believe that Republicans aren’t looking out for us. Republicans often run candidates with clear ties to racist groups and have candidates who at the very worst hold racist attitudes toward the black community and at the very least run candidates indifferent to concerns in the black community. Also, the Republican party opposes many government institutions and programs that help black people as most blacks believe the government has a moral imperative to maintain social justice and to maintain a social safety net.
