D.G. BrownMemberMy sister, who is just a year younger than I, is a high-functioning autistic. I can relate very much to what you’re saying. Aside from her posture (she slouches sometimes), she appears as a perfectly normal person. This is only appearence, though. Even at 18, she still throws tantrums in stores, screams, yells, cries and just about everything that should make me feel self-conscious in those public places. What I’ve learned has been a difficult lesson, but a good one. First, I know that I can’t apply the world’s rules of logic to her. This means that anything can happen at any time and it’s not her fault The second thing is the realization that I don’t care what people around me think. She’s my sister and I love her more than anything in this world. Your concern shouldn’t be with image. Trust me on this. You’ve got to be a good big brother for your sister. You’ve got to be there for her and try to understand her, no matter how frustrating it gets. And never be ashamed of her, please, just never be ashamed of her. In many ways you’re blessed to have her as a sister. Trust me on that, too.

D.G. BrownMemberI am a brunette, though I have been known to dye my hair blond. This isn’t to say I am forsaking brunettes everywhere. I just like a change from time to time. A large portion of my friends are Asian and many of color their hair and use colored contacts. Why? The same reason I do. It’s to get attention. How complicated is that? I’m sure that is true for just about everyone who has participated in changing hair and eye color. If you are Asian, black or Hispanic, especially if you live in a community with a large population of that race, you’re surrounded by a lot of people with black/dark brown hair and brown eyes. An easy way to draw attention to yourself in that case is to change that. Blue or green contacts draw in the occasional double-take and following question. The blond hair just asks for attention.
C’mon people, don’t make fashion statements out to be anything other than that. Not everyone is trying to be political.
