I work in an upscale pre-school where 90 percent of the parents are very wealthy. The kids in my class may have every toy they could want – one gets any toy she wants every Friday if she gets positive behavior reports from me – but they don’t have the love. Don’t misunderstand, their parents love them, but they are so busy making sure they have enough money to ‘prove’ their love that they forget to just spend time with their kids. My kids are so attention-hungry that they have serious behavior problems. Most of my class already has problems with perfectionism. Everything they do has to be just right. They always have to be cute, and failure is not acceptable. I have one little girl (age 3) who just melts down if something she’s drawn doesn’t come out just right. Money doesn’t shelter. When used properly, it can help give a child a good start. But if it’s abused, having money can provide a whole new set of real problems. These problems are just trivialized because of our perceptions of rich people: ‘Oh, poor little rich baby.’
