ChristineMemberYoung girls don’t have as much life experience and may not be able to see the signs that this seemingly nice guy is rotten underneath until it rears its ugly head full force. As we grow older and gain experience, we see these things earlier. Also, there’s the “bad boy” fantasy. Lord knows I dated enough of these in my younger years, but as I grew older, I realized that the bad boy fantasy should stay just that: A fantasy. These aren’t the kinds of men we really want to end up with in life. Another possibility is that a young girl may feel a lot of pressure to have a boyfriend and will put up with anyone. The pressure to have a boyfriend or husband doesn’t necessarily lessen as she grows older, but she will hopefully have gained enough confidence to know that it’s OK to be without a man than with a jerk.

ChristineMemberI just moved from Bemidji, Minn., after four years of college, and I too know the racism there (I had to put up with it from my own roommate). It seems ironic (and pretty stupid) that a lot of white people attack Native Americans for alcoholism while overlooking the fact that just as many, if not more, whites are ruining their own lives everyday with booze.

ChristineMemberIt wouldn’t bother me, not if they were as respectful as any other neighbor. I’d be happy there was finally a mix of people around. I just got out of college recently, and in college towns your neighbors can change pretty fast. My roommate and I were surrounded by other white people most of the time, until a carload of black guys moved into the house across the street. It didn’t bother me at all. They were just like me, a bunch of college kids, a group of guys starting out on their own for the first time. Their skin was just darker. I wasn’t bothered, either, when some Native Americans moved in nearby; I wish I could say the same for my former roommate, though.
