I have heard this rationalization for years. Using your logic, one would be forced to ask why so many black people relax their hair to make it straighter, more ‘white.’ I think the answer is that some people think that having a tan looks nice, and some people like to have straight hair. Bringing race into such a thing is unnecessary and often hostile.
