Mr. Lawrence the Third, living in a six-figure community in West Virginia where people have at least two cars, working as a classy chef, I want to point out the one thing none of the other answerers have noted – you are wealthy, alright? And part of the reason the ‘have-nots’ dislike people like you is you have no idea what you do have, or how you got it. Americans have a cultural obsession with such ridiculous levels of wealth that people like you don’t even realize you’re part of the economic elite. You are probably in the top %20 of Americans, economically, which puts you in an incredibly tiny fraction in a world-wide context. We’re bitter and we dislike you because you feel like you’re economically average and us folks who have to decide which *one* bill we can afford to pay this month – heck, we must seem sub-human to you, huh? We have two poverty lines in this country. One is the real one – below that your life is actually in danger. And way, way above that is another line, and if we fail to be born above it or claw our way up there – well, there’s just something wrong with us, isn’t there?We frighten you so much that you can’t even believe the other line exists. Why do we dislike you? Because, the only thing worse than a cruel slavedriver is one who doesn’t even know he’s holding the whip.
