CattMemberI turned from my religion because of the effect the negativity had on me, mentally & emotionally. I was taught that I was a miserable, unworthy creature who accumulated sin simply by existing. That no amount of good works or begging for forgiveness could make up for my abhorrent existence. That my only hope to escape eternal damnation was the whim of God the Father. I spent my childhood and most of my twenties loathing myself and feeling guilt for every thought and emotion, and for any good thing that happened to me, which I could not possibly deserve. I finally turned away and have never looked back. While I have raised my children to be compassionate, charitable and forgiving, I will never take the chance of taking them to a church where they could be subjected to the beliefs I was taught.
