C. BrownParticipantMany African Americans have a lower body fat percentage, and men have a lower percentage than women. This makes it more difficult for them to float. As a result, if an untrained white and an untrained black person are dropped in the water, the untrained black person has a greater chance of drowning. I’m not sure this is the only reason, because women have a greater body-fat average than men, but nobody ever talks about the male fear of water. So I think there are other factors involved. It seems logical that swimming training and water sports in general are more accessible to historically middle-class families. Any untrained person is going to be afraid of water, no matter what their race.

C. BrownParticipantAs a white person, I think the book title about the ‘wet dog’ smell is a real eye-opener. I know I smell like old bacon if I don’t take a shower all day, so I am not offended to learn that I have a particular odor when I get wet. However, it is very surprising. What really startled me was that all this time I have been running around smelling like a wet dog, and nobody ever bothered to tell me about it. That teaches me a lot about the state of race relations in the United States. It’s what prompted me to take a look at this web site. There are a lot of things about black culture that bother me, but this is the first time it occurred to me that I might be bothering somebody else as well (for a reason that is really true).

C. BrownParticipantI think that a greater percentage of black Americans are Christians, and it seems that black people in general have a greater tendency to advertise their identity by letting everyone know what they are ‘in to.’ Therefore, black people are more prone to vocal religious expressions. I do have a theory that prominent religious displays are a way for anyone to show the world what a good person they are. Since a lot of whites automatically assume negative things about black people, the black people want to make sure you see the positive before you start thinking negative things. A prominent religious display is one way to do that, and I think this practice has spread through the entire black American culture.

C. BrownParticipantI think it’s quite simple that people are more aware of cultural ‘Pride’ when they are either culturally isolated, culturally oppressed, or both. If I as a white person ever found myself being treated like other races in the US have been treated, I imagine I would make it my business to remind myself and my family why we are special and unique. Also, there are a lot of white people out there who really have no culture. Their national origins have been mixed so much that they don’t even know where they came from. About all they know as a common culture is American patriotism, which is not (or at least should not be) white only.
