BrettParticipantMichelle, Some people display the Confederate flag as a form of showing their racism, but that’s not what the flag is really about, and not why MOST people have them displayed. It’s a symbol of a different type of government. Most people think this country was divided at one time (North and South) because of slavery which is not the case. The North was turning communist (which is supposed to be an enemy of America) so the South didn’t want any part of that. They wanted to seperate and make their own country. This country is still becoming more and more communist and I display the Confederate flag myself because I do not support a lot of what our government does. I am sick of people calling me a racist because I display the Confederate flag. If anybody knows their history, the North had all kinds of plantations with black slaves on them. Abraham Lincoln himself had slaves but nobody talks about that. The South didn’t treat slaves as poorly as people think either. In fact, after the war, only a small percentage of blacks left the South to go to the North. Today’s media just tries to brainwash the public (unfourtunately succeeding) that the South is totally racist, even though it was ABOUT the same on both sides. It’s just a social excuse to win certain people or votes on the side of the North. I am really tired of being discriminated because I display the flag, I am automatically thought of as a racist and I am not. I hope more people read this and get a better perspective.

BrettParticipantThe Confederate flag is not a symbol of racism, oppression, etc. You say it is in close association with the KKK? Even though the KKK was foudned after the Civil War? That makes no sense. It may have been a protest in the 50’s against the civil rights movement for good cause… Rights were taken away from some people and given to another body of people. Like Affirmative Action, it discriminates against white people so that black people can have a job that they aren’t even qualified for. No, the Confederacy was not an embodiment to treason and an attempt to destroy the Union. It was simply a huge group of people that wanted to make their own country, pursue their own life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness because they were not allowed that right in the Union. They simply left, and the North came down and ATTACKED the South. The North denied the South’s right to have their own freedom. The Union didn’t want to lose a lot of their land so they attacked a bunch of innocent people to get it back, killing thousands. All because they didn’t want people to pursue their own rights. Yes it is a symbol of states’ rights, no not to abuse humans. The whole states’ rights thing is to be under very little government control, because a lot of government was bad in their opinion. The North was for more government, and the South didn’t like that. That is the reason they left the Union. Not because they wanted to go beat their slaves legally. Only a small percentage of blacks went up to the North after the war. They weren’t being treated as poorly as people say they were. If they were, they would have all gone up North. I bet you didn’t know that Abraham Lincoln himself had many slaves as did a lot of the North. The Civil War was not about racism or slaves or anything along that matter. I’m not a racist, and I display the Confederate Flag. But, often I can’t pursue my own happiness, I can’t even fly a flag that is part of American history without the government coming after me. What happened to my first ammendment rights? I have no problem with ANYBODY, ANY RACE, ANY RELIGION, ANY GENDER being in this country pursuing a hard working life where they can make something of themselves, but I see too many people going on welfare and raping our government and hard working people out of their money which a lot of them are minorites. Again, I am not a racist, it’s just fact and people won’t listen to it.
