I realized this weekend why it’s so important to understand your racial heritage and not just fit into a labeled category. My children, 9 and 7, are biracial (my husband is black and I am white), and they know a lot about their family lineage. My family is mostly Irish and a little German. My daughter’s teacher was asking her class about Irish traditions the day before St. Patrick’s Day, and she raised her hand to talk about Ireland and said she was part Irish. My daughter’s teacher said in astonishment, ‘You’re Irish?’

Because her skin is not pure white, this teacher took it upon herself to label my daughter as black, because of what she could see, instead of seeing many generations of multinational family in one child. If nothing else, this teacher will think twice before assuming things about people’s backgrounds. Hopefully, my daughter’s response, ‘Yes, I’m half Irish,’ will open her eyes.

I don’t think you can get a conclusive answer of American women’s sexual habits from the Internet. I mean, there are millions of women in the United States … how can you know what most of them think? Here in America, sexual roles are pretty equally divided. Men and women both want sexual pleasure. Pertaining to touching men, there are women who wouldn’t touch a man’s penis with a ten-inch pole (excuse the pun), and there are some who want to touch them all day. It’s really all up to the individual. I personally think the human body is amazing and should be touched regularly. Touching is good.

As half of an interracial couple, I find that most people get their attitudes about interracial relations from their parents. I’ve been married to a black man for almost 10 years, and I knew when I met him that my parents would have no problems with us dating. My father’s comment was, “As long as he treats you well, I don’t care if he’s white, black, purple or green. But God help him if he doesn’t.” People also wonder how biracial children will be treated. My children are nine and seven and have never had problems. Maybe I’m just lucky so far, but I’ve always taught my kids that everyone is different in some way … either skin color, hair color, height, weight, etc. You’ll find in your life that everyone has a problem with something. The important thing is to know how you feel about racial issues and stay true to those beliefs.

My friend and I are sitting here reading your response and we have this to say. We don’t care if teachers connect with their students. The kids in schools today are going to be the ones who are your doctors and lawyers when you are old and crusty and you are going to hate when they say ‘How yous doing today. We’s going to do some tests. It’s gravy.’ The level of education in schools today is poor enough without having to worry about whether these students are learning basic grammer or ebonics. When a person opens their mouth and starts to speak, that’s their neighbors’ first opportunity to get an impression of who they are. Ebonics spouting out are only going to put you into a downward spiral.
