I am not myself Indian, but my husband is, and I used to wonder the same thing myself. The short explaination is that there is no one single reason! In modern times, the dot (bindi) is considered decorative, and many women wear it as a fashion accessory. Previously (and even now in North India), it was the mark of a married Hindu woman. My grandmother-in-law tells me that the tradition started because it was believed that by wearing the bindi a woman would ward off the evil eye. I think that the real answer has been lost in antiquity…
