Ben S.ParticipantThere are tons of stories and interpretations involving the rainbow flag. The only consistent thing I know about it is that it is a gay indentifier. One place says that purple should be on top if you ARE gay because the purple and blue stripes represent lesbians and gay men respectively. Others say it makes no difference. And some say supporters should put the flag upside-down. If you wish to show your support, you might want to go the route of maybe getting a pflag (Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) sticker or even something from the Human Rights Campaign. There are even some t-shirts or buttons you can get that say things like ‘Straight but not narrow’

Ben S.ParticipantMy absolute position is that it’s all nature. Someone is born a homosexual with homosexual feelings. The feelings show up early for some and later for some but they were always a hint. A good analogy would be that many kids could identify as a Democrat because they like the ideals of the Democratic Party. Then, later in life they start thinking ‘Who is going to pay for all of this?’ and their ideals slowly drift to the Replican side of things. Your entire identity can change over time without you ever helping it or realizing it. Being gay is like that. Nature had it there from the beginning and one day you are suddenly aware of it. From that point you can’t stop your awareness of it or forget it. Here’s your choice: Do you act on the feelings or not? Remember that they won’t go away, you’ll still want it but you just won’t let yourself have it. It’s like telling yourself that from puberty onward you will never eat pizza even though it looks and smells really good. I can tell you that the average person couldn’t do it. Neither can the average homosexual. Most people cave to the feelings eventually. As for church teaching these things, it think it’s a numbers game. Make the really big rules really easy to follow. 1) Accept God as your Saviour. There’s no real test for that. It’s supposed to be personal and different for everyone so as long as you tell us you’ve accepted God, we’ll take it as proof. 2) Don’t be gay. Not a problem for at least 90% of the people out there. As for the other 10 or so percent, we’ll use them as an example of true sin and evil. It’s much more believable when you can see it in person.

Ben S.ParticipantI’m sure some people out there are attracted to themselves, but it’s probably more of a fetish than a mainstream interest, even for gay men. I have found, though, that quite a few gay men are more interested in the maintenance and appearance of themselves, not because of self -attraction but because we know what type of body and looks we are interested in and try to become our ideal person. I find that rings true even for myself. If I find myself attractive, I tend to be more confident around other people who are attractive. Thus, what looks like a sexual attraction for myself is basically pride in my own body while trying to attract sex from someone else. After all, I can touch myself whenever I want, but I don’t have that kind of access to someone else’s body.
