I have a Catholic partner, and we both do the things you mention. We sleep on friends’ floors and heartily accept gifts from them. I don’t think this is frugal, I think it is because we are sociable people and are used to sharing our living spaces with friends and family. I think people who have to go 50-50 on everything and never stay over with friends are much more uptight about money and relationships than we are. Similarly, when we are doing well, we treat our friends to beer, food and floor space. Of course, the world is full of chancers who take you for what they can get, but I don’t think they are confined to certain religions.
