I don’t know about any difference in black people’s tipping habits, though I have heard the rumors (and discount them as unproven). I will say this, though: Anyone, regardless of race or whatever, who doesn’t want to leave a tip shouldn’t eat in restaurants where tipping is expected. The service has to be pluperfect awful before I will not leave a tip – the litmus test here being “Do I need to tell the manager?” Once or twice I have found myself short of cash, so I left the best tip I could and explained to the waiter/waitress that I was tapped out and regretted the small tip.

If someone has a philosophical objection to tipping, they should write to all the restaurant chains and try to change the system. Until then, tipping is part of eating out in North America. If you don’t like the rule, don’t eat out. (The same would apply to home delivery: If I want to avoid the tip, I go to the restaurant and pick it up myself.)
